Diablo Evolution

Today I would like to show you the evolution of Diablo, the Blizzard's brand that in the last 11 years saw 2 incarnations with 2 respective expansions and a new episode incoming soon (Like a fan of the series I hope to see it before 2010); Diablo I, Diablo I Hellfire (The expansion wasn't made by Blizzard but by Sierra On-line now Sierra Entertainment), Diablo II, Diablo II Lord of Destruction. For Diablo III, at the moment, we have only a bunch of gameplay videos and a trailer.

Diablo I
I still remember the first time that i saw the cinematic intro, wonderful for that period. This video is from the expansion: Hellfire

Diablo II
A great step forward, good plot and huge cinematic scene. A Masterpiece!

Diablo III
Real 3D graphics with beautiful effects but the gameplay still look the same. I hope that it will be as funny as the predecessors:

This is the beatiful Diablo III trailer, in pure Blizzard style:

On Gametrailers I found an interesting Diablo evolution video focused on the barbarian character:

Castle Crashers

After a looooong wait, I'm very sad but I will not have the possibility to play this old-hack'n'slash-style with uber fascinating graphics game.

I followed the develop from the very beginning. Today it will come out on the Xbox live arcade distribution channel and I have no xbox here in Edinburgh.

My Xbox360 (Elite) is at home (in Italy) and even if I really wanted to test it, to play it with my friends, I can't!

I'm cut out.

A couple of video to give you an idea of what kind of game is:

Californication

Today I want to talk about Californication, one of the most funny series that I've ever seen.

David Duchovny (X-Files) is extraordinary and it really fits in the character (Hank Moody) making you forget Agent Mulder and all the I Want to Believe crap. From the first minute you get the hilarious point of view of an irriverent writer with a block, ready to blow with his promiscuous way of life, jumping from a bed to another one, fucking around like a rabbit every woman he meet on his way.

Natascha McElhone (The Truman Show) is Hank Moody's muse, his ex wife, the one that he try to get back for all Season 1.

Nasty and unbelieveable things happen all around Hank's way, keeping the attention of who is watching.

Tom Kapinos, the creator of the series, is a new face on the business and he made his first steps with Dawson's Creek (he wrote an episode of the teenagers series).

Sexually strong, with a 60's freedom base and a bit of nihilism; Californication is a must, and I believe that it could become a cult.

This is a short Season 2 behind the scene, if you did't see Season 1, WATCH OUT! Is full of spoilers.

This Sunday night, before to start another week full of hope and waiting for some changes to come, 3 songs for you to listen:

Tihuana - Tropa de Elite
Tropa de Elite (Elite Squad), is one of the most powerful, violent and controversial brasilian movies. The song is beatiful and I suggest you to see the movie.

AC/DC - You Shook Me All Night Long
A great classic dedicated to all the girl that knows how to shake a man.

Pixies - Where Is My Mind (Edited on Fight Club)
I want to dedicate this song to myself, for everything that I'm living in this period of my life. Where is my mind?

Animation crossed the Human-like borders?

That's a good question!
I always thought that a Human Being is so full of particulars that it would be hard, if not impossible, to digitally reproduce it right now. I always thought that it could take almost other ten years before to have a credible synthesis recreated human.
Those guys from Image Metrics broke the Uncanny Valley barrier showing us that there is no limit on what we can reach and when we can reach it.

The Thursday's Movie Quotes

Today I will focus on Al Pacino's most famous speech:

Any Given Sunday - Life's inches.
This one is great, if you never heard it, open your ears and enjoy it. Touching!

Devil's Advocat - Something about God ("In Typography" that I like so much)
Powerful. Funny. Clever. Think about it.

Scent of a Woman - End Speech (Spoiler!)
Explosive!

Goodies:

this one is for my country, Al Pacino talking a broken italian (Sicily Accent actually) in The Godfather:

Back to School: Napier University

Yes, it's true.
After my first degree taken in Italy as a Movie and Tv Director (BA), I'm getting back to study at 25yo. My next goal is to reach a degree in Interactive Media Design, mix my knowledge and go ruling the world.

I choose Napier University, I liked the course and what it has to offer.
Is the 6th highest modern University in the UK and is the first one in Scotland (Where I live at the moment) and I am a UE student, here they don't pay university taxes. It's funny but, UE and Scottish student, has the possibility to not pay taxes, English not, they have to. Is always an open fight against each other.

I'm excited, I can't wait anymore!

10 Most difficult games ever.

Gametrailers write on a list of the Ten Hardest Games ever:

Battletoad was really pretty hard and sometimes makes me completely crazy, in fact I never finished that game. But Ghost'n'Goblins is hard to finish even with the unlimited credit offer by MAME. Crazy!

Portal

One of the most interesting game that I've ever played is Portal. A great and simple game that took some of the "gravitational ideas" used by Valve in Half Life 2, adding the portal gun and a minimalist environment area.
The experience shine since the beginning and after the first rooms you manage the entire situation and you start to understand the real potential of this adventure.
The style is the added value. Everything is so minimalistic and appropriate that you love the game after 5 minute.
The longevity, is maybe the salt part of the candy,
I said maybe cause in the end, is ok, you don't really want more and the feeling of satisfaction is enough to let you get the point: is good like it is.

I can't not to post the final song, a masterpiece! It's even downloadable as a Rock Band track.
Watch out! Is the end of the game: The spoiler!

The cake is a lie!

The Dark Knight

I saw the new Batman's adventure only tonight and:

Booooooom

explosive, breathless.

Pure entertainment. 152min of real movie experience.

Heath Ledger is a fantastic Joker (Goodbye Heath), and it takes the movie on his hands from the first appearance. Christian Bale, Morgan Freeman and Gary Oldman are at their standard, probably Bale confirm himself like the best Batman ever on the screen. The others are pretty ok.
The storyline is solid and the lines are great, I can't think at something really bad in this movie. For sure better than the first one (Batman Begins), it's a pure concentrate of action.

Christopher Nolan is doing a great job with the DC Comics Hero.

The impressions on the movie seem to be quite unanimous:

9.2 and #3 best movie ever on IMDB

94% on RottenTomatoes UK

Here is an interesting fake poster for the next chapter (nice job):

Teen Wolf Revised

One of my childood movie, Teen Wolf, got a funny new point of view by those guys here. Good job men, I appreciate the effort:

Enhance videos with photopgraphs

Read these things is like get shined.
Those guys are working on something really good on video editing world.
Use photographs to enhance the quality of a scene, leveling the resolution, helping to remove object and fixing an handshake video shot, seems like a cheap solution for the semi-pro world. The results are good, and their video explain well how it works:

Life Glitch

Have you ever felt that sensation?
A glitch, yes, is what I mean. A technical problem, something that doesn't work.

step 1: breath
step 2: think
step 3: jump

The fact is, and if the jump will be a deadly one?
ok, no pain no gain, but...(yes I believe there is a but in this case) Think about it, if the pain is spreading in the wrong direction?
Is like driving a car, if you seriously lose the control, or you are a kickass stuntman or you are fucked up.

That's how i feel in this moment: fucked up.

We can call this period of my life: Negative.

Everything, E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G that can go wrong, goes wrong. Is there someone behind the cloud, over the sky? Oooooooh celestial figure, please, please...
I'm not asking for help, but, you know...you could try to give me a positive thing out of 5?!...out of 10, maybe?!

Is out there someone that can make me a gift?! I need positive energy...
You, yes you, you that now reading this shit are thinking "I'm better than you" yes you! Lucky motherfucker, you! Try to write on a comment, send me a little sparkle of your fucking fortune. PLEASE!

I need to create a new button to put instead of my personal pic, "click to donate me some fortune"...

I know that looks like a lame-emo-teen-outburst even if I'm not a Teen anymore...whatever

aaaaah sadness, the next step will be crying in front of a sheet asking to leave Amy Winehouse in peace...Help me!

When reality goes over fantasy

A garden's gnome that, after being stolen, does the world tour and get back home. One of the great bright idea from "Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain".

Now is reality.

After a 10 months trip the garden's gnome of Eve Stuart-Kelso got back home with a bright new photobook and a great experience on his back; it travelled the world!
I envy you, little earthenware guy.

Xbox 360 Dashboard Evolution

During those 3 years the xbox360 had a good number of dashboard update, at least a couple for year (spring and fall update). We can talk about 3 major versions:

1.0 This is the early Microsoft Xbox360 dashboard (2005/2006), rude but essential (after the first upgrade):

2.0 Fall 2007 dashboard, not a huge change but the dashboard became more beautiful and useful.
At this point the dashboard was able to use Messenger, permitted download while playing and added a new movie streaming service. The most important improvement was the possibility to play Divx:

3.0 This update will be the next one (Fall Update). Huge steps forward and great restyling. Possibility to install the games on the hard drive reducing load times and a brand new option to build your digital avatar and interact with other players:

VG Sites: How to waste your time behind VideoGames (and loving it)

Speaking with a friends of mine about my VG bookmarks' folder, I was thinking that could be a good idea put a list here of what sites you can check for news, videos, pics, trailers....

Here it is:

www.ign.com
I started to follow this site when was only an indie site, in 1996. I was 13 and I was looking for Nintendo 64 info on the net, at the beginning the name of the sites was ign64.
Now is one of the most seen videogames site on the net with more than 20million of contacts every month. I think that during all those years it lost a lot of his appeal becoming a huge commercial site. His reviews are not so significant like in the past. Anyway is still very meaningful for the worldwide videogamers community.

www.gamespot.com
Born before IGN, in the early beginning was a pc based site, becoming a multiplatform one only later. VideoGameSpot.com was the name of the console section before becoming an all-in-one site in the 1997 keeping the most known pc section domain. Like IGN, Gamespot is one of the most followed videogames site in the net.
IGN vs Gamespot is a classic match for the videogamers community, their reviews are very meaningful and gamespot is usually the parsimonious one on voting.
A big black spot for the gamespot carrier was the Gerstmann scandal born from the video review of Eidos’ Kane & Lynch. This situation uncovered the old known problem of a sponsor and fair review.

www.gametrailers.com
More recent if compared with the others two giants, is the most updated sites for video, trailers, comparison between multiplatform game and more. Is a must, particurarly in the hot periods like E3 or the Tokyo Games Show. Often it offers a good selection of exclusive and during the passed year it introduced HD video streaming, video reviews and users generated contents.

www.qj.net
A very young agglomerate of videogame, gadget, WoW and more news. Pick your favourite console and start reading fresh, is one of the most updated videogames news' site.

www.gamekyo.com
Born from the French site Jeuxfrance, fresh news and an eye on japanese games.
The only problem: is in french.

www.gamersyde.com
I started to follow this site when was divided in two section, Ps3 and Xbox360 (I use to see the Xbox site). Now is an only one site with screenshots and video, not always uber updated but I like his minimalist style.

www.neogaf.com
One of the largest and most followed videogamers' community on the net. A lot of interesting people post there and often they discuss news before to find them around.
A good resource for everyone that want to understand well this world.

Even if the paper is now considered vintage, two walking bible are still around for the videogames industry: Edge and Famitsu. Their votes are still now a point of reference and are good for all the community's console wars out there.

History of Blizzard Entertainment (Part 1) - Deep look

Intro

After talking about the World of Warcraft addiction (not so seriously actually), I would like to discuss about Blizzard. This software house in the last 14 years has created 3 of the most important and interesting videogames saga: Diablo, Warcraft, Starcraft.
Those 3 names are very important in the videogames history, having a crucial position in the market. Everyone knows those brands and respect Blizzard for his quality seal.

The Very Beginning

Blizzards starts from scratch like the best software houses out there. At the very beginning was only a developer called Silicon & Synapse, they worked on various porting from Amiga or Commodore 64 to other platforms.
The first important steps were made in 1992 with "The Lost Vikings", a platform game with a lot of humor where you were supposed to control one of three Vikings each time with the others to follow and each one with a different peculiarity. The game was published by Interplay (almost dead in 2004, now seem to be on his way back to their successful series like Earthworm Jim, MDK, Descent and Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance).
"The Lost Vikings" were made firstly for SNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System) and secondly on the other platforms with a good success. The sequel was made 3 years later and converted from another developer (Beam Software) on 32bit consoles.
That's the comment made by Travis Fahs (IGN Retro ) on the SNES version of "The Lost Vikings" Review:

It is smart, stylish, and different, and those are the same qualities we still look for today.

The thursday's movie quotes (3 movies to quote about)

I want to promote this space in my blog The thursday's movie quotes, 3 movies to quote about.

During my life I saw a lot of movie with memorable lines. Always thanks to YouTube and the people that invest their time putting video on it, here it is a part of my favourites:

Pulp Fiction is the kind of movie that needs to be quoted for entire but I will try to choose 3 moments:

Don't fuck Jimmy me Jules! A great Quentin in action:

Say what again! (the interesting typing version). Samuel L. Jackson, a plus in this movie:

Oh, you ready to blow?! This speech is my best one:

Straight from my childhood It can't rain all the time from The Crow. It was a must. Every time that I was fucked up I started to think at this line:

Sex is everywhere, Roger Dodger. A great speech from a navigate uncle to a young teenager nephew (why nobody didn't tell me that stuff?!):

P.S. A goodies for everyone (but not for kid actually) Fuck Fiction (2min of Pulp fiction Fuck, WTF?):

Stop Motion Technique

A video technique that I always liked is stop motion.
One of the most representative movie is Tim Burton's (The) Nightmare Before Christmas (1993).

How it works?
Is a frame by frame animation where every shot is a little bit different from the other one.
In every shot the object that is moving will do little steps on the direction is going through.
It takes time and you need patience but in the end the results are satisfying.

I always liked it because is a simple way to build a short movie idea , you only need a camera, a lot of fantasy, some cool music and an editing software. For example:

This is a kind of human skin cartoon which is very funny and well done.

This example is a professional surrealistic view of a spaghetti dish. The huge number of pics taken for every movement let everything look so fluid. A masterpiece:
